Topic Paper Assignment
You are required to write a topic paper on a topic related to deviance and/or
social control based on one or more of the topics covered in class and in the textbook/readings. Your paper should address many of the same questions we will ask this semester: why are these behaviors considered deviant or conforming?; who has legitimate authority for deciding this person or group and their behavior is deviant?; why do people or groups engage in this deviant behavior?; how do these deviants view their behavior?; what impact (both positive and negative) does the deviant behavior have on society?; in what ways has society responded or reacted to the deviance? Your essay should be approximately 5-7 pages double spaced. The essay incorporates multiple, accurate references to online and text content as support for thesis/claims/argument. The essay should use accurately the style of citations with APA format. The essay must demonstrate superior, academic knowledge of the topic under study. The work must cite material from the course textbook and use at least two outside scholarly sources cited in accordance with APA guidelines. Papers without both sources of information will not be graded. Do not use articles that are more than 10 years old and do not use direct quotes from your source(s). Newspaper or magazine articles and books other than the textbook for this class should never be used as references. Web sites cannot be used unless they are credible such as the site of a government agency or a highly recognized organization such as a national health organization or academic association.
