Write 500-1000 words on an economic topic of your choice.
This is an opportunity to research any topic related to the issues we read and discussed. Don’t hesitate to pursue your interests even if they are marginal or weird 🙂
You are required to make explicit references to Komlos (2019) as well as relevant different and opposing approaches from your prior assignments (or new ones).
You are required to incorporate some analysis of your topic in the context of:
the current looming depression (V, U, L, or K shaped TBD)
the 2008 “Great Recession” and the responses to it
the rightward shift to Neoliberalism (late 70s – 2008)
the “30 glorious” years (WW2- mid 70s)
Evaluate the different perspectives you use to study your chosen topic, distinguishing between internal and external criticisms, and between theoretical and applied elements.
Consider how you think the economic discipline is doing. How are you evaluating this? What would you like to see rise to prominence and what should be discarded. What kind of economics do we need to contribute positively to dealing with existential problems of our time.
Don’t be shy about your ideas and recommendations. DO your best to justify them analytically and to persuade your reader that you are correct. You may be young undergraduates, but the future belongs to you (such that it is), and older people (especially Boomers lol) need to STFU and recognize what a mess we made of your future!
