Assignment Description: 
The eportfolio must be structured in five thematic categories: (1) Classical Islamic, (2) Modern Arab, (3) Qatari, (4) Contemporary, and (5) Public. Although there are inevitable overlaps, this thematic division allows us to focus on the wide range of art collections available in Qatar in different museums, art centers, and exhibition spaces.
Briefly, (1) Classical Islamic art refers to the art forms and crafts historically produced for Muslim patrons in places ruled by Muslims. For this category, your obvious focus should be the collections and exhibitions in the Museum of Islamic Art. (2) Modern Arab art or al-fann al-’arabi al-hadith includes the art produced in the twentieth century in Arab region or by Arabs using modern artistic styles and forms. For this category, you should make your choice from the collections and exhibitions in MATHAF: Arab Museum of Modern Art. (3) Qatari art refers to traditional heritage crafts (such as sadu) as well as the work of modern Qatari artists also displayed in MATHAF: Arab Museum of Modern Art. (4) Contemporary art specifically refers to the arts of the present. This category will include artworks available in current exhibitions in the Fire Station, Katara, M7, and among other venues as well as in recent exhibitions of contemporary global artists that took place in Qatar. (5) Public art includes the art people experience outside of the usual rigid spaces for art such as art galleries and museums.
As such, your ePortfolio will consist of 5 short interpretive, creative, and dynamic essays of 750 words each—in other words, one essay per art form. Ultimately, you are invited to research, reflect and write about five “most favorite” artworks of your choice in the categories mentioned above. You have free reign in selecting your artworks. If you feel unsure about your specific choice or analytical angle, you can run it by me. I am happy to brainstorm together, but I will not assign one to you: the E-portfolio project is designed to let you research and write about artworks that interest you.
