Public health informatics is the application of information science and technology to public health practices, medical research, and planning. The Internet plays a key role in the continued evolution of health informatics and is closely tied to the planning, development, and implementation of public health systems.
Research public health informatics using the assigned readings, the South University Online Library, and the Internet. Respond to the following:
Explain why knowledge of traditional public health disciplines such as epidemiology, biostatistics, or toxicology, in itself, is insufficient to plan, develop, and implement information systems in public health practice? Support your answer with appropriate scholarly references.
Compare and contrast epidemiology and public health informatics.
Explain how informatics augments the practice of improving the public’s health. Refer to available CDC informatics data programs and Healthy People 2000, 2010, and 2020.
