Advanced practice registered nurses have a clinical and ethical obligation and responsibility to uphold and advance healthcare policy in the United States. It can be noted that while there are over 4 million practicing nurses in the US as of 2021, nurses have historically not acted as a cohesive unit to drive the knowledge or economic force of their large workplace numbers (Patton et. al, 2022). Traditionally, nurses are great at reacting and influencing current policies and protocols yet have not done as much initial policy making. Oftentimes, policy work is seen as jobs that have a political office space, something that is not enticing to nurses, but policy advocacy can also be through political action committees, writing letters, serving within boards in the local community, voting and testifying in legal situations. It can also be noted that many nurses find their niche in the political aspect of nurses through the desire to change a variable within their scope of practice, often inspired by the drive to improve patient outcomes and the nursing profession (Patton et. al, 2022).
My advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role is nurse executive leadership and education. My future role can directly act as a change agent in healthcare policy implementation. Personally, I see my role as a nurse executive leader, but I also have a passion in teaching and education. Thus said, with nursing being one of the fastest and largest growing professions, nurse leaders and educators must constantly evaluate current policies to be active and relevant to today’s society (Cusson et. al, 2020). We must create an educational program that pushes students to achieve the best of their ability while also staying up to date with current needs of the community. This can include ensuring hospital organizations have adapted to current policies to allow for the best and safest environment for new graduate nurses to practice in. Additionally, the executive leadership role is one that focuses on innovative technology, and perhaps policy and technology need to exist together to ensure proper technique and skills are utilized. For example, many medications on online electronic software now have the option to view a safe and secure site to learn what the medication is. This hospital’s ability to own this software is in the responsibility of the nurses and nurse leaders to suggest this change. One article highlights how important digital software became during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the foundation for a ‘Cures 2.0’ bill was formed. (Martin, 2020). This bill recognizes the importance of medical funding for innovation and digital health products to ease the heavy workload of frontline nurses (Martin, 2020). This bill was then escalated quickly during the pandemic to ensure nurses were able to use technology to their advantage in this extremely trying time. Situations like the former are ones I will personally be involved in and must ensure that I am an educated APRN on the most current political choices and reforms. I envision my future role as one that requires constant adaptation and patient to ensure safe and high quality care is provided by my peers.
