This concept is about context:
1. Consider the importance of the character of caliban in the play. In particular read from the middle of act 1, scene 2 (lines 269 to 374 in the penguin edition, where there is a discussion of how caliban came to the island and his background story.
This passage begins with the lines:
“Prospero this blue-eyed hag was Hither brought with child, and here was left by th’sailors.thou my slave” ……and ends with caliban speaking: “it would control my dam’s God setebos, and make a vassal of him”.
Everything from the first quote above to the last one should be focusing on this question.
Relate this to ideas of the sense of injustice in relation to power and how those in power can oppress others. Look at the essays by Meredith skura the case of colonialism in “the tempest” and Charles Frey “the tempest in the new world” which give background contexts and interpretations. Discuss how either or both of these essays impact your reading of the play. Draw on your own experiences or those of family and friends to consider how you understand caliban and his point of view.
