To conduct a research paper that will critically analyze the intervention of the UN in the Palestinian refugee crisis, specifically focusing on the actions taken, particularly by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). By examining the responses by the UN and their impact on the enduring displacement of Palestinian refugees, this study intends to draw lessons applicable to ongoing crises, such as the Ukrainian and Syrian refugee situations. The United Nations (UN) intervention in global conflicts has been pivotal in addressing humanitarian crises, notably in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. However, its actions and policies have sparked debates regarding the efficacy and inadvertent consequences in prolonging refugee crises. This research aims to investigate how the United Nations’ interventions, particularly in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through UNRWA, have inadvertently contributed to the prolonged Palestinian refugee crisis by overlooking the dire need to help Palestinian refugees safely return to their homes by addressing the root issues causing their displacement. Through a comprehensive analysis of UN actions and policies for Palestinian refugees, it will be used to evaluate the impact of UN interventions on the prolonged displacement and mixed sentiments among Palestinian refugees and to draw parallels between the lessons learned from the Palestinian refugee crisis and the ongoing Ukrainian and Syrian refugee crises. For the Ukranian and Syrian crises, I will focus on the aspect of how the recommendations can be applicable for those crises. I want to propose recommendations for more effective UN strategies and interventions in managing protracted refugee situations, based on the analysis of past interventions in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. To critically examine the role and actions of the United Nations, particularly UNRWA, in the Palestinian refugee crisis. This study will employ a mixed-method approach, incorporating qualitative analysis of UN documents, reports, academic sources and policies related to Palestinian refugees. Comparative analysis will be conducted to draw connections between the Palestinian crisis and current refugee scenarios, offering insights for better practices in addressing protracted displacement.
