This paper is intended to assess students’ understanding of course concepts and readings. The paper should both utilize concepts discussed in our courseFor this paper, you should focus on the ways that an issue we have covered in this course affects a specific subgroup of people (for instance, you could write a paper about the specific experiences that black women have in the workplace).
A specific concept you could explore in this essay is the intersectionality of privilege and oppression, focusing on how various social identities intersect to shape individuals’ experiences of privilege and oppression. You could draw from readings such as Hill Collins’ “Toward a New Vision” and Lorde’s “There Is No Hierarchy of Oppression” to analyze how factors like race, gender, sexuality, and disability intersect to create complex systems of advantage and disadvantage.
this paper must:
Focus on a topic that we have already covered in the course. You can go from the beginning of the course up through the religion topic, but make sure that you meet the guidelines below.
Utilize 5 articles, 3 of which must be readings from our course textbook and 2 of which must be outside sources. One of the outside sources must be a peer-reviewed (academic) source. You must include at least one quote from each article that you use.
Incorporate specific concepts from lecture slides (and cite the specific slideshows within the paper). These concepts should be used to help organize your paper, not just serve as add-ons.
Employ an intersectional focus–meaning, you need to consider the salience of multiple elements of identity.
Be 1000-1200 words in length (not including your works cited page).
Include a works cited page.
Be shared with a small group of classmates on a Moodle discussion forum. I will organize students into small groups, and each group will have the opportunity to either read each other’s papers or watch each other’s presentations (depending on what each person chooses).
this paper will be graded on:
Specific use of course concepts
Use of sources, including specific use of course readings
Depth and specificity of discussion of your chosen issue and subgroup
Intersectionality of discussion
Clarity/spelling/grammar
