The United Auto Workers (UAW) gave up very large concessions during the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The federal government played a role in managing the bankruptcies of GM and Chrysler. In the negotiations in the following years, the managers offered one time bonuses to the workers, but failed to return the historic concessions. In recent years, the executive leaders of the auto companies received huge compensation packages. Auto executives in some other parts of the world have started seeking to increase their own incentive compensation. In the fall of 2023, the UAW struck. The UAW leaders sought the return of the concessions they had given. They asked for a 40% pay increase. They noted this was comparable to the increases auto executives had received.
