The intent of the Process Papers is to foster critical thinking and learning throughout the course. Each submission will contribute to a part of the Final Paper and Presentation. The Process Paper will be graded on:
how well the questions are answered (depth and thoughtfulness),
originality of thought,
integration of the course content and discussions to support your opinion or position,
organization (does the answer flow and make sense), and
attention to detail (following APA guidelines, grammar, spelling, etc.).
The first Process Paper is due as follows and will address the following theme:
Theme: Identity
Due: July 5 (Week 3)
You will submit the process paper as a WORD document (.doc or .docx) by the due date. You will have a ONE-DAY grace period with a 20% point deduction to turn in this paper. After that, no submissions will be accepted.
Please write at least three (3) pages that answer the following prompt:
Draft a thoughtful essay that summarizes and analyzes how a particular racial/cultural group defines, promotes, and manages the theme of IDENTITY. Be sure to only use the course content (and at least one source from another class) to support your claims and examples. 
Choose one (1) racial/cultural group that we discuss in class to explore the theme through. Connect the theme of Identity with the population, then bring in the course content to help create a coherent essay. Be sure to include the following five (5) sources:
the course textbook, Rethinking Ethnic Studies
at least one article
at least one podcast
at least one video
at least one source from another course you are taking (or took) at Saddleback or another school (high school or community college). Note the course, teacher, school, semester, and year in the essay and then again in the reference page.
This is an academic paper so be sure to:
use academic language; all colloquial language should be used sparingly and put in quotes
write an introduction and conclusion
Use the Claim-Evidence-Reason structure used in science classrooms and include at least three to five body paragraphs (1 intro, 3-5 body, 1 conclusion)
Languages other than English can be used sparingly in this essay. Please provide a direct or reasonable translation is provided in brackets [ ] in the paper next to the phrase(s).
Please be sure to follow APA formatting. Points will be deducted for not adhering to this writing convention. At minimum, your paper should have the following APA components:
Cover page (not included in page count)
Double spacing
Proper paragraph structure
In-text citations
One-inch margins
Reference page (not included in page count)
