Source is going to come from only one which is Worlds Together, worlds Apart third edition volume 2. Edited by Elizabeth Pollard  and Clifford Rosenberg W W Norton company  New York London.
Format: 3.5-4 pages (Double spaced, 12 Font, 1-inch margins). I do not count title pages,
heading information, or citations as part of the page limit.
Assignment Instructions: Choose one of the primary source documents you have read for this
course. Your task is to read the document very closely and then to write a four-page essay
analyzing it as a historical source. Treat your reader as an outsider, someone not in this class but
smart and interested in the kind of history your document illuminates.
Your paper should do the following:
1. Provide an introduction – Introduce the source, briefly describes the time period or topic
that it relates to, and then makes a firm, clear thesis statement asserting your argument
about the source. Your thesis statement should, in one or two sentences, answer the
questions: “Is this document valuable as a historical source? Why or why not?”
2. Describe the Document – This should be a simple summary that provides the essential
information about the document. Here, you should explain the following: Who wrote the
document and why? When? Who was the intended audience? What topic or issue does
the document describe? What position or argument, if any, does the author take? Once
this is achieved, describe the most important details of the document.
3. Explain the Historical Context – In this portion, your purpose is to describe the event/time
period that the document comes from, to explain the writer’s place in the the broader
history. Here you should explain the following: What historical event or issue is the
document related to? What happened during this event? Where does the writer fit in relation to the event or issue? What does the document tell us about the historical period
or event? For this portion, you will need to use information from the general textbook
and/or your lecture notes. Make sure that you cite the textbook or lecture. If you do not
cite either, you will receive the grade penalty outlined below.
