1. By the end of the 20th century, the United States had higher life expectancy and higher overall health status than ever before.  Much of this is attributed to specific innovations to public health achieved in the past century.  In chapter 1, review “The Great Public Health Achievements-United States, 1900-1999 and 2001-2010”.  In 200-300 words, pick one of these achievements and discuss how it has helped to increase life expectancy and/or the overall health status in a community.  Provide factual documentation that reinforces your views from at least one peer reviewed source.
2. There can be a number of reasons why a person dies from a particular cause.  And remember there are causes to the cause for every health outcome.  Pick one of the five social determinants of health and in 200-300 words explain how it can interact to cause one of the five leading causes of death in the U.S.

Both the spread of communicable diseases and the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases can best be reduced by the appropriate application of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention measures by the community and the individual. Pick a communicable OR noncommunicable disease (no one can pick the same one) and provide an example of a primary, secondary and tertiary prevention measure by either the community or individual to reduce the risk of that particular disease. What was surprising to you when researching the various types of prevention for your chose disease?
4. In 200-300 words, mention one reason why you think young adults have a higher risk of sexually transmitted infections than other age groups and what can be done to reduce the risk by focusing on your reason. The health care system in the United States differs from most developed countries.  Other developed countries have national health insurance and almost all citizens are entitled to receive health care services, including routine and basic health care.  Given what you read in Chapter 13, in 200-300 words, why have some questioned whether the United States really has a health care system? What is a strength in the U.S. health care system and what is a weakness?
6. In the last few years, decriminalizing cannabis and legalizing marijuana has gained momentum in a number of states throughout the country.  In 2020, voters in both Arizona and New Jersey passed a law to legalize marijuana in their state.  Such legalization has implications on our health, social and economic fabric of society. In 200-300 words, what are the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana in New Jersey?

Our health is affected by the quality of our environment, including the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the communities in which we live.  Every year, the United Nations publishes a report on the State of Global Climate (https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/reports).  Read the latest report and in 200-300 words, do you think recent changes in climate and weather are more attributed to natural or human causes? Provide factual documentation that reinforces your view from at least one peer reviewed source
8. According to the CDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (part of the U.S. Department of Transportation), every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This is one death every 50 minutes. In 2010, the annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion. In 2016, more than 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.  In 2018, more than 10,500 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.  Police check points have been a great deterrent in reducing alcohol-impaired driving crashes. In 200-300 words, what else can a community do to effectively reduce traffic accidents due to alcohol consumption?  What primary prevention strategies can we use to stop people from driving drunk in the first place?
