Principle Illustrated: Not all art is representational in nature.  Art serves more than an aesthetic function.  It seeks to alter observers’ perceptions.
Purpose: To realize that artists actively attempt to shape people’s attitudes and beliefs, and increase the public’s awareness of issues in and through works of art.
Directions: Visit an online art gallery for this assignment to find examples of art that are intended as political and social statements.  If you are searching online, you might search terms such as “activism and art” or “protest and art” or “feminism and art” or “performance art.”  screenshot or print screen a copy (poster, photocopy, download, etc.) of a particular work of art in your assignment and explain what political or social message the artist was trying to communicate.
As an example, there were a number of post-9/11 art exhibits designed to galvanize Americans’ patriotism and promote healing in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States.
Be certain to discuss concepts covered in the text as you analyze the artwork that you use for this assignment. A rubric will  be provided for this assignment.
