Objectives:
The following project focuses on reinforcing your knowledge of scientific study of developmental psychology by assessing your understanding of key ideas and theories throughout the semester.  The project requires you to create a body of work that, when turned in at the end of the semester, reflects your understanding of how individuals develop over time.  The project meets the following course objectives (1-5).
Instructions:
Below are two activities/assignments that correspond to specific time periods in development.  As we move throughout the semester you should be actively working on the assignment/activity that corresponds to the current Unit that the class is covering.
Please, please do not wait until the end of the semester to do this project.  There are weekly work assignments along the way to help you get some feedback.  Please use them!
·      First, it is time intensive and waiting will cause you a great deal of pressure.
·      Secondly, and most importantly, the assignments are timed to help you remember and understand material that is specific to the Unit that is currently being covered.  This helps prepare you for class discussions and exams.
On the due date specified you will be asked to turn into Blackboard one word document (.doc or .dox format) that is a completed project including each of the assignments below.  You should be thoughtful in how you organize the project.
Organization:
o   The project should be in APA format 7th edition (please use student paper format).  There is a link to this format below the paper instructions.  Include a title page, a page that separates each section of the paper, and a reference page at the end that includes all references (in APA format) for each of the paper sections.
o   Intext citations should be included throughout the project as appropriate. Please remember that if you use information from your textbook or Room it should be cited.
Part 1:  Room:  Key theorists and developmental milestones in childhood and early adulthood
In the novel Room, many aspects of Jack and Ma’s life are unusual, yet many typical developmental events occur despite the difficult circumstances. What aspects of Jack and Ma’s life are typical of human development versus what aspects of their development would be considered atypical?
Using your knowledge of human development across the lifespan answer the following question in a 5-8 page paper.  Be critical in your thinking as you relate theory to the novel.
·      Pick 2-3 physical, 2-3 cognitive, and 2-3 social/emotional examples from the text of either typical or atypical development for Jack.  You should document the aspects of development and connect them to theories you have learned about this semester and milestones that we have learned about.
·      Pick 2-3 total physical, cognitive and/or social/emotional examples from the text of either typical or atypical development for Ma. You should document the aspects of development and connect them to theories you have learned about this semester and milestones that we have learned about.
·      Your paper should balance and connect knowledge of human development to content from the novel.  Theories should be specifically referenced and discussed in the context of your examples of growth.
You must use APA to reference both Room, as well as the textbook, as you discuss theories and developmental milestones.
