Chapter 11 is a really important discussion on management and organization of the social venture. Your textbook author refers to it as ‘building a social venture team’. In any organization, the quality of the
management team and the overall organization are key to building a successful company (think Google or Apple). In a social entrepreneurial venture, these qualities are even more critical. Avery is the founder and president of a social venture in your community. She employs both paid employees and volunteers. She has recently observed conflict between the paid staff and the volunteers. She comes to you for advice and help to identify the root causes of the conflict and propose solutions. Develop a plan of action that would include how you would identify the causes of the conflict and what remedies you would propose. What do you think led to the conflict between the paid employees and the volunteers? How you would assess the success of your intervention?
Chapter 12 continues the discussion by examining organizational effectiveness. What is organizational effectiveness? Suppose you are leading a new social venture that aims to help reduce illiteracy. How would you measure the effectiveness of your social venture? What metrics would you use? Why do you think a multi-dimensional approach of effectiveness is appropriate for social ventures? Efficiency is also discussed in this chapter. Based on your understanding of effectiveness and efficiency, explain when a social venture is effective and efficient. Can a social venture be effective without being efficient or vice versa? Provide examples as appropriate.
