In short form: You need to pick a scientific article to critique. It needs to be quantitative article (since qualitative won’t necessarily have the raw information you need to address, e.g. a specific claim, etc.)
Research Critique – The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to analyze the scientific quality and merit of a published study.
Elements of the project:
1. Identify an area of research that you would like to focus on.
2. Select a scientific article to critique. If you have any difficulty finding one, contact your professor and/or review the library guide. The article should be clinically relevant and no more than five years old. Do not choose a brief report or a short study (i.e. should be more than 5 pages). Meta-analyses are allowed but not recommended due to the added complexity.
3. Your research critique will focus on your article of interest. Remember to focus on critiquing the article based on what you have learned in class, not just providing a summary of what the article’s authors wrote. It consists of three parts:
Critique paper (see Rubric for full grading details) (THIS IS ATTACHED BELOW!!!!!!!). Please utilize section headers outlined in the rubric.
Submit the original article.
A presentation of the article and research findings: Plan for ~5-7 minutes per person.
Notes: The majority of your critique should be written in your own words, with minimal quotations. Be sure to cite as necessary, per university and ethical guidelines.
Be sure to focus on using the concepts and information from the course to evaluate the article. The majority of your critique should be your own thoughts and evaluations (be sure you provide analysis for all summarized information).
You will need to provide information from the article to support your claims. For example, statements such as “the study demonstrated good internal validity” require you to provide a brief summary of the aspects of the study that you are using to draw this conclusion.
You may also want to discuss what information is not included in the article and how that affects your evaluation (e.g. “The authors did not include a description of the recruitment techniques used for this study, which affects…”).
