In our second course unit, we have explored issues surrounding the working conditions and
experiences of migrant laborers in California’s agricultural industries. Our discussions and
understanding of such issues have been supplemented by our readings, as well. Drawing from the
texts we have read in class and your own research on related topics, write an essay that responds
to one of the following prompts.
1. Key factors in much of the exploitation of migrant laborers in both the past and present
include workers’ status as impoverished peoples, immigrants, non-citizens, and/or
persons of color. Write an essay in which you address a specific problem related to issues
of identity and/or the legal status of agricultural laborers and propose a solution for it.
2. The fight for workers’ rights has been central to many of our readings and class
discussions, and its relevance is obvious when looking at those issues being addressed by
civil and labor rights groups in the Central Valley. As we have concluded, many of the
concerns these groups address in their activism are as relevant today as they were at the
advent of large-scale agriculture in California in the late 1800s. Select a concern that is
pertinent to migrant and/or farm laborers’ rights and present a supported argument that
takes a side on that issue. Draw on your knowledge and research of past and present
working conditions and labor struggles to provide context and supporting evidence. You
may want to visit the UFW’s website for information and ideas.
3. Activism and community engagement are important in promoting a cause and bringing
about meaningful change. The texts we have read and our classroom discussions have
highlighted the work of various individuals, fictional and real, who became active in
labor organization, workers’ rights, and civil rights. Using and evaluating select examples
from our readings and your own research, present an argument in which you advocate for
a particular form of activism over others based on purpose, methods of execution, and
results. Forms of activism can include types of protests, boycotts, or letter writing
campaigns, for example.
