May 1, 2024

In his book Halfway Home: Race, Punishment and the Afterlife of Mass Incarceration, Reuben Jonathan Miller offers the concept of the “afterlife” to describe how punitive institutions reach beyond the specific acts of legal punishment to shape individual lives, families, and whole communities.  An afterlife suggests a kind of “haunting” in which experiences or relationships that are in the past continue to influence the present and future.  In Assignment 2 you are invited to take the concept of “afterlives of mass incarceration,” and apply it to specific experiences that you or some one you know has had or to a contemporary event or policy.  In describing the experience, event or policy you choose make sure to answer the question: how does this experience that you or someone you know has had, an event, or policy demonstrate Reuben Miller’s concept of the “afterlives of mass incarceration”, along with citation to the relevant passage or passages in his book.  Your answer should describe how you learned of the experience, event, or policy, including your own witness or the testimony of others, or if it is drawn from public sources, a citation to the relevant source.
