In 1971, the first email was delivered. More than 40 years later, social media has taken
the world by storm. Social networking sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter,
are now used by 1 in 4 people worldwide. Such activity may seem harmless, but some
researchers suggest social media may affect our mental health and well-being. In both
positive and negative ways, social media has profound implications for our identity.
In paper, you will first discuss how identity is made more complicated in the age of
social media. Second, you will introduce a “For Dummies” guide to social media,
identity, and perception. This can be written in any format. In this guide, you will
discuss identity on social media for someone who has never heard of it. You might
consider questions such as who counts as a friend? What are things to keep in mind
when posting/tweeting/sharing? What behaviors should you avoid from a professional
standpoint? What are appropriate vs. inappropriate statuses/tweets/pictures?
Incorporate a minimum of three outside sources (books, academic journal articles, etc)
in your paper.
