Imagine a younger friend comes to confide in you because he or she is unhappy: he or she is restless and bored; things that used to be fun no longer seem so fun, there is nothing to do
but play video games, his or her friends are lame, etc. He or she is thinking he or she just needs to get out of this college town, maybe look for work in LA or Seattle or something, and probably find some “hotter girls or guys” there.
How would you advise him or her, first as a modern follower of Epicurus (one full paragraph or so), and then as a modern follower of the Stoic Seneca (another paragraph or so). Your whole essay should be 300–400 words. Please also include a brief introduction and conclusion.
All essays should reflect careful attention to the course materials (original sources and commentary lessons), so please quote writings from Epicurus and Stoic Seneca, however you don’t need a reference page! The point is not to state your feelings, impressions, or opinions, but to demonstrate knowledge of the course materials and to engage them intelligently. A clear and careful statement of the argument of the text(s) you are responding to is the first priority. Of course, your opinions will be reflected in your writing, but your aim should be to demonstrate your understanding of the sources and your capacity to engage their arguments.
