Article Title: Genetically modified insects could disrupt international food trade
Author and Publication: Max-Planck-Gesellschaft; February 1, 2017
Summary:
Genetically modified insects have been placed into crop fields to hopefully limit the need for chemicals. These genetically modified insects are made as males that reproduce only males so the population of females will decline. The purpose of these genetically modified male insects is that mating with wild females will lead to nonviable eggs so that the insect population decreases in the crop. This approach is meant to replace the use of chemical pesticides to control insect populations. However, there is a downside to this approach. These genetically modified insects can disrupt organic farms.
No laws in place make users of these genetically modified insects not have to disclose that they are using these insects so organic farmers may not know they are in their area. These insects disrupt organic farming making the label of organically grown be false to consumers. Trade both locally and internationally of organic foods may not be approved due to these genetically modified insects. However, if an organic farmer are not aware these insects are in their area, they do not know their food is going to be disapproved leading to a disruption of trade. There is currently a debate on the transparency required when it comes to using these genetically modified insects.
Note: In the attachment I will provide an example of how to respond to the question.
