Lab Report:
Follow the following
format for your lab report: :
Title page (1
point):
The title page (first
page) should consist of the following:
Title: Be concise. Using the title from the lab
book is appropriate. (e.g., Bromination of hexanol)
Your name
Your lab partner’s name if applicable
Professor’s name
Date the experiment was performed
Abstract (2
points):
A short summary of the
experiment, including the findings/major data values like melting point,
percent yield, IR values, and more which help you to identify your product or
summarize the result of the experiment, in one paragraph at the bottom of the
title page. (Hint: It should be the last item you write.)
Introduction (3
points):
Introduce the topic,
including the reason why the experiment was performed, and what we are trying
to prove and/or achieve. Provide relevant background information, indicating
the proper references. Indicate your hypothesis, and your expectations of the experimental
outcome. Limit to two pages.
Materials and methods (3
points):
Include a list of
materials and the procedure.
Results (4
points):
Include all results,
even the mishaps. All data must be tabulated (e.g. you must use tables
for data). Display your calculation and formulas. Use of proper
significant figures and units are graded. Graphs should be titled as follows:
“Figure 1: Reaction Rates.” Tables should be titled as follows: “Table 1: Raw
Data.”
Discussion (6
points):
Provide a summary of
your experimental findings, tying it to the previously known and expected
information. Elaborate on personal experiences and findings. Discuss whether
your findings agree with your expectations/hypothesis. Elaborate on the reasons
why you were, or were not, able to prove your hypothesis. Include the summary
of your data or refer to it with a proper designation, e.g., “Data in Table 2
indicates…”).
Conclusion (2
points):
Provide a brief
explanation and the conclusions of your major findings including numerical
values of major findings like melting point, percent yield, and more which help
you with either identification of product or percent yield. Do not repeat the
entire data table. Explain your success, or lack thereof, in proving your
hypothesis. Include contributing factors to success, or possible reasons for
lack of success, and provide suggestions for improvements.
Bibliography (1
point):
Cite all references you
actually employed, not ones the book cites. The number of references will not
affect your grade either way, but a lack of proper citation or acts of
plagiarism will.
Screenshots (3 points):
Take screenshots as
directed in the experiment video. Paste all required screenshots into your lab
report.
