5 points
In poetry, simileLinks to an external site. and metaphorLinks to an external site., and analogies are figures of speech that compare one thing to another.
A simile makes a comparison using the words “like” or “as.”
Example: The concert was so crowded, it felt like a million people were there.
A metaphor makes the comparison directly, substituting one thing for another.
Example: That test was a killer.
HERE IS THE SHORT HW
Below are two Haiku poems by female Japanese poets:
What is each poem conveying? What similes or metaphors are they using?
A. “Although the wind …” By Izumi Shikibu
Although the wind
blows terribly here,
the moonlight also leaks
between the roof planks
of this ruined house.
B. “When my desire” By Ono no Komachi
When my desire
grows too fierce
I wear my bedclothes
inside out,
dark as the night’s rough husk.
