Synthesis Question 4: Body modification has existed since the beginning of recorded history,
and most of these modifications were performed for function as opposed to useless aesthetics.
Although, this too was not always the case, often body modification was performed to indicate
beauty and status. Today, plastic surgery permeates popular culture. It responds directly to
unrealistic beauty ideals perpetuated by social media; this is most significantly debated when
considering surgery and adolescents. What are the consequences or benefits of plastic surgery for
contemporary youth? What are the ethical considerations and the potential health/image?
1. Address a synthesis question and make a claim (thesis) about the readings.
2. Summarize, evaluate, and analyze the views of two writers on this question.
3. Show you have wrestled with different perspectives and articulated your own new view
of the question (synthesis!). Consider not only how you’d speak back to these texts but
how they’re speaking with each other and what ideas, questions, or conclusions that
conversation leaves in your mind.
4. Be logically and thoughtfully organized according to your thesis.
5. Be proofread for typos and grammar, and correctly use MLA formatting.
