How do the articulated processes of current models seek to achieve their stated goals?

March 29, 2022

During Week 5 I asked you to review the Inclusion-Exclusion board (PDF: Inclusion-Exclusion) again to consider a space where you feel included/excluded and how design mediates that experience for you. I asked you to also review the Mural board (PDF: Equity and Community Designers) of Community- and Equity-centered design initiatives and identify one community- or equity-centered design initiative to learn more about.
To those students who did the work directly on the Mural board, well done! If you did not already do so, I ask you to please follow the example of your classmates and complete that work. If you are not comfortable using the Mural board, you may complete the work in this discussion thread. (If you already completed the work, you are absolutely still invited to participate in a dialogue about the initiative you evaluated. The space is yours.)
Questions
1. Consider a space where you feel included/excluded and how design mediates that experience for you. How do the articulated processes of current models seek to achieve their stated goals?
2. Identify one design initiative and evaluate the work it is doing in the context of its Claims (what it says it does) and Perceivable Outcomes (what you can tell about its work through its claims and public discourse).
-How are they using design thinking/making/teaching in order to mediate their work?
-Who is using design: the facilitators or the community members or both? What does that look like?
-Would you classify the creative experience they facilitate as Art or Design?
-Are they proposing change for Individuals or Communities? Are they proposing self-empowerment or policy change? Explain.
