Glycolysis/Gluconeogenesis Enzyme
Description
Hexokinase is the first enzyme in the glycolysis pathway. It converts glucose into glucose 6-phosphate and ATP into ADP. It is part of the kinase family (EC 2.7.1.1). Although it is mainly known for its work in glycolysis, it is also able to phosphorylate other 6 carbon sugars. A deficiency in hexokinase leads to the genetic disorder haemolytic anaemia.
