Designing a Lesson Plan for Educating and Supporting Parents
This assignment is an opportunity to design a lesson plan that will educate and support a specific group
of parents.
You will be asked to:
 select a target audience or group of parents that you would like to help
 identify a parenting skill or set of skills that would be useful for the parents to learn
 design a lesson plan to teach the skill(s) that is based on relevant course material
You are not required to implement your lesson plan, but it is highly encouraged that you do so in the
future. It is a great opportunity to apply what you learned and support parents and children.
What learning outcomes should my Lesson Plan address?
Lesson Plans should be designed around the following three learning outcomes or goals:
 Enable parents to reflect upon and improve their parenting practices
 Strengthen parents’ ability to interact effectively with their children
 Promote positive developmental outcomes for parents and/or children (e.g., secure attachment,
self-esteem, social skills, academic achievement, emotional well-being)
How do I create a Lesson Plan and what do I turn in?
There are two parts to this assignment that you will create and submit.
Part 1: Description of the lesson plan and the rationale or evidence-based or evidence-guided research
that supports the design of your lesson plan (e.g., Why did you choose certain activities? Why is the
parenting skill or set of skills important for this group of parents? etc.)
Part 2: Lesson Plan materials that you would present to parents. These are the parent-facing materials
that you would use during the lesson (such as PowerPoint slides, handouts, activities, and/or videos).
Both parts can be submitted in the same format or file, but do not necessarily have to be. For example,
you may choose PowerPoint slides for creating parent-facing materials, and a separate set of slides for
describing and outlining the rationale for your lesson. Another option would be to submit the
description and rationale as a word document. It is your choice!
A worksheet for designing and organizing a lesson plan is provided below but it does not need to be
submitted — it is for planning purposes only.
