Thesis and Introduction Revision Assignment Instructions
Overview
The proper use of logic in writing involves using both proper content and proper form. Legal writers must be able to identify main arguments and make them clear and concise. They must also be able to edit their work to avoid extra words and jargon. Arguments should focus on making statements rather than asking questions. This assignment will provide the opportunity to revise an argument so that it provides proper transitions and steps of reasoning while also being grammatically sound.
Instructions
Analysis
Read the following thesis statement below. Analyze the statement based on the overview above. Identify the central argument the author attempts to establish, and determine whether clearer and more concise words can be used to make the argument. Once you have identified the central argument, use legal reasoning either in deductive or inductive form to organize the paragraph in support of the central argument in a grammatically and logically correct manner.
Thesis/Introduction
As Americans we must abide by many laws. Some are federal, while others are state or local. One however must ask what if we don’t abide by the laws of the land? It seems that we the people are quick to incarcerate those who break the law. Placing people in jail as the first option is leading to over population within the justice system. The prison system is suffering from over population due to individuals being incarcerated for minor drug charges in comparison to the crime committed. If alternative punishments are utilized by the court systems, the number of people torn away from their jobs and friends and families and society will decrease and as a result the economy and social health of the country will flourish.
Writing Submission
Your final written submission should not simply include the rewritten paragraph; instead, it should first provide the original paragraph. Then, commit your analysis to writing by discussing the central argument that you believe the author is attempting to make and whether there is a clearer, more concise way to make the argument.
Next, provide your reordered/reconstructed paragraph, ensuring that it makes non-emotional, logically coherent arguments. The argument must emphasize reason. Make sure to revise the grammatical mistakes as well. Finally, using appropriate definitions and examples from your reading materials, provide a detailed explanation of whether your revised paragraph is inductive or deductive.
The assignment does not require any additional research on the topic, except that which is provided in your reading. Your draft submission should include a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page in APA format. No abstract is needed.
