Be sure to answer all of the questions!! Personal stories, reflections, and critiques of the articles are acceptable but the paper must be grounded in the questions and the sources.
As you construct your responses to the following questions, be sure to maintain a critical analysis of how race, class, gender, and sexuality are constantly intersecting with one another.
There is substantial scholarship that looks at the evolution of masculinity across the globe, regardless of race, ethnicity, and/or class. Many U.S. scholars have concluded that the 21st century has witnessed “an ongoing epidemic of men’s violence in America rooted in society’s outmoded beliefs that men should be emotionless, dominant, womanizers, and should use violence to solve their problems. We see evidence of this “hyper” or “toxic” masculinity in our politics, in mass shootings, in sports, and even in some men’s reactions to powerful women like Taylor Swift, Nikki Haley, and Kamala Harris.
Hyper-masculinity within Chicano communities is no different than in other communities in the U.S. While not all men perform hyper-masculinity, some do. Therefore, it is important that we critically analyze how gender (masculinity) intersects with race, ethnicity, class, religion, politics, economics, and so many more intersections, and how these intersections play key roles in how people perform gender, and for the sake of this question, how some men perform masculinity.
In a 3-4 page paper, 12 pt. font, and double-spaced, please provide your own critical analysis of the following questions:
1. How does masculinity intersect with military service along the U.S.-Mexico border and in Chicano communities? Be sure to discuss citizenship and you must provide examples, and analysis of your examples, from the Rosales article and the podcast.
2. In the article “Learning From the Death of Gwen Araujo,” Linda Heidenreich argues that there are “clear shades of queer” and then uses Matthew Shephard to support her claim. What does she mean by “clear shades of queer” and how does Shephard’s case once again introduce the “outmoded ideals of manhood?” Provide examples, and analysis of the examples, from the Heidenreich article.
3. In the video Southwest of Salem, analyze the character of Javier, the father of the two little girls at the center of the accusation. How would you characterize Javier’s masculinity? Does it compare to the murderers of Gwen and Matthew Shephard? If so, how? If not, how is his behavior different? Provide examples from the film.
Edit carefully for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors before submitting because I will count off for such errors! Please upload your paper correctly to the submission link so that I can provide feedback, and be sure to submit on time! The assignment is due: July 14, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. (MST).
