Answer one of the following two questions with a 1,200-1,500 word essay.
1.) Compare and contrast the common experiences of American Women and society’s ideals for women. Are the differences greater or lesser before 1830, or between 1830 and 1900?
2.) How fair is it to say biology determined women’s social status in the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Early Republic Eras? Does your answer change if you’re evaluating the Mid-19th Century and Late 19th Century (or Progressive Era)?
Your essay must include very specific and detailed examples from the textbooks, lectures, and articles that you have read. If you include quotes from any of the books, use parenthetical citation; the author and page number in parentheses at the end of the quote. A proper essay has an introductory paragraph, a thesis statement, a substantive body of many paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Your answer needs to be based on the course material up to this point in the semester. DO NOT USE MATERIAL FROM OUTSIDE THIS COURSE! This includes internet sites and other scholarship not assigned in this course.
