June 23, 2024

An introduction that has
A creative lead-in/hook.
An introduction to the article with the author’s name and “Article Title.”
A statement of the article’s claim. (what does the author claim about the topic)
A thesis statement that evaluates the article. (Is it well written or not? What aspects will you, the writer, analyze) The thesis will NOT address whether or not you agree with the article. That is irrelevant to this assignment.
3) Body paragraphs (4 minimum)
Each paragraph will address one of the seven elements we discussed.
Each paragraph will have transition words to help the reader move from one section to the next or sentence to the next.
Each paragraph will have a clear topic sentence and a clear concluding sentence. Avoid “First, Then, Next” framing. Use more sophisticated transitions, as discussed in the lecture.
Each paragraph will use at least one quote from the article, cited correctly in MLA.
Each paragraph will discuss NOT the article’s content but rather how the quotes you choose illustrate the point of the section.
4) A conclusion must
Summarize the main point of the paper
Restate the thesis statement in different words
End the concluding paragraph with a broader note that is not a cliche or formulaic ending.
Language
Try to stay in the third person, meaning you will not say things like “I think that…” or “You can see that…” See the sample paper for how this might look. NO: I, Me, Mine, Ours, Our, Myself, We, Ourselves, You, Yours, Your, Yourself
Third Person: She, Her, He, Him, They, Them, herself, hers, his, himself, themselves, their, theirs
Formatting and Mechanics
Use the MLA style to format your paper, as the lectures explain.
Make sure that you proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.
