A. Somatropin is used to treat growth failure and growth hormone deficiencies in children and adults. Somatropin replaces human growth hormone, can stimulate growth of internal organs and skeletal growth. It has many indications including treating children with chronic renal failure that lack growth hormone, treating children born small who do not catch up by 2 years of age, and to increase protein production and growth in AIDS related cases (Svensson & Johannson, 2003).
B. Leuprolide is used to treat certain cancers, endometriosis, and precocious puberty. Adverse affects include; hot flashes, irritability, changes in menstruation, erectile disfunction, decreased libido, decreased muscle and bone mass, and increased risk for seizure activity (Tucker, 2022).
C. Desmopressin increases water absorption and decreases urine formation. Desmopressin is used to treat neurogenic diabetes insipidus and nocturia.
D. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia are possibilities while administering growth hormones. Blood sugar should be closely monitored. It is also contraindicated in patients with active malignancy due to potential risk for tumor growth. Growth hormones may also cause hypothyroidism, so it is important to monitor thyroid function. Presence of a closed epiphyses is contraindicated as growth hormone can be used for linear growth. Any acute illness puts the patient at an increased risk for mortality and is also contraindicated.
