Please leave in a 2 question format. The guidelines for the questions are provided, please let me know if there are any questions or confusion.
Your answers should be drawn from: my
notes, the texts, module overviews, videos, discussion boards, and your original thoughts. Each essay should be answered in about 800 words. I do not want to see any numbering or bullet
points and nor do I want to see my lecture notes copied and pasted. Answers should be in your own words and in a conversational essay style format. You don’t have to cite the textbook or my
notes but reference the assigned videos by name or topic. You may refer to and properly cite outside sources (current events or scholarly works) at a minimum.
As an upper level course and given that you will have access to your notes and other materials, I
will be grading this on a difficult scale. For all of the essays I am looking for answers that clearly
articulate what you have learned with relevant examples. In addition, answers should contain
analysis. This includes compare/contrast, assessing strengths and weaknesses, and your opinion
(if applicable). However, as an upper level class, it also means that you consider broader trends
and when applicable associate arguments with appropriate theoretical models as you assess
comparative topics. In turn, be very concise in your response and balance descriiption with analysis.
Answer the two essay questions below according to the instructions above.
Q1. Discuss how states promote and manage economic growth while responding to global
market forces. How do developed states address economic and social inequality in labor, welfare
and health care policy, and what challenges do they face in such efforts?
Q2. What strategies have developing states implemented to close the gap with wealthier states
and to what extent have each been successful? Assess the relationship between poverty and
economic development. What impact, if any, does regime type have upon economic
development?
Essay Response Notes:
Guidelines for Q1: In the first section, the emphasis should be on responses by states in Europe, North America,
and Japan, but references to China, India, and other countries should be made as well. The
response to the second section should only cover developed states, do not include rising states
like India and China or developing states. When discussing responses by states to inflation,
unemployment, and other related topics, please feel free to refer to more recent sources of
information. Though the emphasis should be placed on contemporary topics, include references
to the 2008 financial crisis and other past examples of economic challenges addressed by states.
Guidelines for Q2: I expect references to specific regions: Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and to specific cases
like China, but you may utilize additional examples of your choosing. Developing states in this
essay refers to those states outside of Europe, U.S., Canada, Australia, NZ, and Japan. However,
distinguish between NICs and the countries of the Bottom Billion, and consider various
definitions of development and poverty. Utilize material from both texts.
When answering an essay, keep spelling and grammatical errors to a
minimum and complete the following tasks:
• Define the terms within the essay and any terms you introduce in
your responses.
• Provide examples of all relevant material (key persons/institutions,
policies, statistical trends, etc.) that demonstrate knowledge of the
content associated with each essay.
• Analyze the material associated with each essay. Analysis includes:
(1) compare/contrast any key terms, (2) strengths/weaknesses of
arguments, decisions, policies, etc., and/or (3) a well-developed
opinion.
• Review the key terms below and plug them in as applicable into
each essay response.
• Incorporate the learning objectives from the weekly module
overviews as applicable.
• Read the assigned chapters, review the lectures, and refer to the
videos or discussion boards when applicable. When reviewing the
texts and lectures, refer to material in identified tables and figures
and those of your choice. You do not have to identify specific items
(Table 1.1), but rather simply summarize what you learned from
them.
After writing a rough or final draft of your essay responses, ask yourself the
following questions.
1. Are both my essay responses about 800 words or more?
2. Have I included as many of the Key Terms found at the bottom of each
applicable module overview into my essay?
3. Does my response adequately reflect the material in the texts and
lectures (and videos)?
4. Are my sentences clear, do I need to elaborate upon anything?
