Do you believe worry can have adaptive qualities?

September 21, 2022

1. While in treatment, some people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are reluctant to give up their worrying and worry behaviors because they believe these features are helpful to them (e.g., Adrian arrived at work 30 minutes early each morning to plan her day and to decrease the likelihood of making mistakes or overlooking important tasks). Do you believe worry can have adaptive qualities?  If so, what are they?  What do you believe are the negative consequences of worry, especially when worry is at the level found in GAD?

2. As in the case of John, men are more likely than women to cope with their panic attacks by using alcohol or other drugs; women are more likely than men to develop extensive agoraphobic avoidance in response to panic attacks. Why do you think this is the case?

3. Bonnie received group treatment for her social anxiety. What are the advantages and disadvantages of group treatment (versus individual treatment) as an intervention for Social Anxiety Disorder?

4. Research has indicated that in some persons, a strict, devoutly religious upbringing was a factor that contributed to the development of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Based on the information provided in the Case 5 section “Case Formulation Using the Integrative Model” in this case, why might this be?  What other social and developmental factors do you think might contribute to the origins of OCD?
