Assignment Prompt
Introductory books are often described as “a mile wide, a foot deep.” It’s not really a criticism because the author’s objective is to provide a broad overview of the field. Books like American Education often leave students with lots of questions and the purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to look into a significant issue that reflects the relationship between school and society in more depth.
You can select one of the wide variety of topics discussed in the text, perhaps one that was not covered in much depth or an issue that you have a different view of than Joel Spring does.
Choose a topic that reflects the importance of education in our society and /or how educational issues are related to social issues, controversies, inequality or unmet needs in American society. You could write about Universal Preschool, Teacher Shortages, School Violence Prevention, Gender Equality, Teachers Unions, Homeschooling, School Choice, Multicultural Education, School Segregation in the 21st Century, Book Bans, Recovering from Covid Era Learning Loss, Improving School Nutrition Programs, Controversies about what to teach students about Black History or many other significant issues.. Take a look at the on line resources section to see if there is anything relevant to your topic or to get some ideas for a topic if you are having trouble choosing one.
Assignment Guidelines
What you include in your paper will depend on your topic, but here are some general guidelines:
Describe this issue as you understand it from the reading, from your research, and from your own experience with schools if that is relevant. You may include your views and opinions but you need to support them with credible information from your reading and research.
Include 5-10 quality references including any relevant information from American Education, links and references identified in the module ( except for instructor written material in the Content Guide) and additional quality sources ( books, articles from credible publications, appropriate academic or professional web sites)
Include new and updated information related to this topic. Pay attention to when references were published. Do not assume that everything in American Education or any reference or information provided within this course or any other information you find is absolutely up to date.
If you focus on a problem, include and discuss suggestions for addressing it. “What Works” Clearinghouse” or
Edutopia” identified in the Online Resources page for this module might be helpful
Include a reference section listing the references that you cited . Please include URLs if available. If you include any unusual references not available on the web or in our on line library include an informal note about where you found them and why you selected them as a postscript to your reference section. This is an unusual requirement but should be helpful for assessing originality.
If the issue has become a political one, you should probably discuss that. If there are legal issues involved, you should probably discuss them.If the issue you are writing about is very current, Find Law might help you find out if a court decision has resolved them.
