Humanity
is at the core of all living things and the reality is that all humans
struggle. Some struggle more than others due to abuse, discrimination, and
disabilities. The intensity of that struggle can affect us in different ways
with a variety of factors coming in to play such as ethnicity, race, gender,
family, etc. These types of struggles are often ones that we cannot overcome on
our own and the help needed may only be found by those trained and experienced
in dealing with these struggles. Human services are often on the front lines to
provide this much needed help. Human services professionals are trained with a
variety of competencies, which is important “because in the human services
profession the human services practitioner is the primary tool used to effect
change in people’s lives” (Martin, 2022, p. 9). There have been many struggles
throughout history, but the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic highlighted not only
the innate insecurities and struggles that people faced physically,
emotionally, and psychologically, but the fight to ensure that basic needs
(e.g. having food and water) as a human are met. This fear was compounded with
the feeling of isolation and people felt the need to protect themselves in the
most basic ways. This showed the need for qualified human services
professionals to provide guidance and help by “redefining the problem and
focusing on a clients’ existing strengths and abilities rather than their
deficits” (Martin, 2022, p. 15). The struggles we go through in life are not meant
to be faced on our own. Human services professionals are often the calming
factor, listening ear, and guiding hand to lead those who are struggling to a
better place. While broad reforms can be an important part of bringing balance
to the struggles that we as humans face, at the end of the day we are still
human. We need a human touch from those who are qualified with unique abilities
to bring hope, encouragement, and healing.
