For your final project you will develop and create your own syllabus for a 4-week mini-course called “Contemporary Global Cinematic Blackness Film Studies.” By “contemporary” I mean you will identify films from the 1960s forward.
Consider regions and national cinemas not covered this semester such as Australia, Korea, Japan, Italy, Benelux Europe, MENA Africa, Canada, India, and Spain.
To create a syllabus for your final project you will:
Target an upper division undergraduate class
In the description set up of your course (1 page)
pose a central question that will be investigated through your course (think “thesis” or “through line” or “focus”)
define what is meant by “global” and “Blackness”
choose one conceptual or theoretical framework covered during the course after the midterm and link to your central question that is investigated by your course
briefly argue why this course should be taught
Identify four (4) screenings (one for each week).
Research your films and provide a rationale for the chosen films (how these films fit into your overall conceptual framing for the whole 4-week course). Additionally, please include the following for each film:
Brief profiles of each film (director, writer, talent, budget, year, etc.)
Situate films within their ‘national’ or regional cinematic traditions
Pair screenings with at least one reading, annotated, and a justification for the readings and authors
OPTIONAL: screen shots are great and are additional to your page count
Format: For your descriptive set up, rationale, and justifications, double spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman, 1″ margins, numbered pages. You will provide a separate grid of screenings and readings as an appendix to your descriptive explanation. As a way of gauging your writing:
Description as an executive summary (1-page).
Rationale and justifications, approximately 8 pages (10 pages MAX).
Appendix A = list of readings (1-2pages)
Appendix B = list of screenings (1 page)
Appendix C = Grid of screenings and readings together (1 pages)
