Part One
Spend a paragraph on the main artist and any other important members, this can include some biography and musical background. What genre of jazz does this seem to fit in?
Pick 3-5 songs to focus on, and write a review like before. This section can be no more than 2 pages. Feel free to share opinions, but note how this was done in the reviews you read. They probably didn’t say “I like this because…” Try to keep it journalistic in style.
Some prompts:
who solos?
what instruments and who is playing them?
how does each solo develop, is their interaction between the players?
who wrote the song? 
describe the overall arch of the song, where does it get louder or more exciting etc.
what is the vibe? emotion?
anything else you want!
Part Two
The second part of the assignment asks you to take the role of an ethnomusicologist, a scholar who observes musical practices as an anthropologist. For this section, I would like you to observe, record, and report on the performance as a social event. Observe the performers, audience, and (if any) the support staff, how they behave, how they interact, who they are. How did this group of people come together? Where is the venue located, what is it like, how far do you think people traveled to get there, how do you think people got there? If you use an online concert, you might not be able to see all of these things, so focus on the performers, and do some research on the venue and maybe the city it is set in and what it was like at that time. We usually do not attend to these aspects of a performance, but I want you to see if you can describe both the event and the setting. If the first part of your paper evaluates the music, the second part of the paper will give an account of the performance as a social event.
For both sections of this paper, your goal is to be as specific as possible in your evaluation and observations. For each section, you are providing evidence to support your conclusions.
