In art history, we’re always looking for what a work of art can tell us about it

April 29, 2024

In art history, we’re always looking for what a work of art can tell us about its context. Maybe we want to know more about the person that produced it; the daily lives of the person/people who owned or used it; or perhaps the economics, politics, religions, and/or fashions of the past. In this assignment, you will use what you have learned about “General Scotts Entrance into Mexico” in the first two papers to put forward a hypothesis about how your object might help us better understand its context. This part of the project is more speculative than the previous two assignments, but you will want to try to answer the following questions:
What makes this object important for understanding its historical context?
What questions must still be answered about this object to reveal more about its historical context?
What kind of sources would you need to answer these questions?
You will present your thoughts on these questions in the form of a short abstract that outlines your hypothesis and the direction you propose for future research.
Word count: 500 Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced, citations according to Chicago Manual of Style
