Topic: Mars Colonization
Case: Outer space treaty
(instructions from my syllabus)
The most effective arguments will be well-researched, employ concepts
from the course material, and offer an interesting comparison to another treaty/event. While
you may select a comparison case that was addressed in the course materials, this is ONLY
advisable if it is the best fit. The grading and further details are discussed in the breakdown
below (note that each requirement will be graded as excellent-4%, above-average-3%,
adequate-2%, insufficient-1%, or missing/irrelevant-0%):
3
1) Selection (4%): Find at least ONE treaty or event related to the issue that is BOTH
political and international, with those more recent being best. This should be
an individual process, collaboration is NOT appropriate. Additionally, the more
unique your selection the better your research, involvement, and grade will be.
2) Detail (4%): The write-up of your proposal should be at least 1,500-2,000 words
(6-8 pages 2x-spaced, not counting sources). Anything less than this length
would be difficult to satisfy the other requirements. Remember that writing
clearly and concisely will help convey your ideas and arguments the most
efficiently. For formatting, use 1″ margins, Times New Roman (12pt.), and
double-spacing. Also include a word count on the first page.
3) Content (4%): After briefly introducing why you have selected your comparison
case, present some key details to orient the reader. The majority of this section
should establish the major actors involved, what issues are at stake, and the
outcome.
4) Evaluation (4%): Apply at least 3-5 concepts or theories we have discussed in
your solution by arguing how they help resolve the issue. Generally, only
include linkages that you can connect with solid evidence and reasoning, using
detailed but succinct points to explain why. A good score on this metric will
mean using linkages that are informative, substantial, and appropriate. This
means selecting linkages wisely to maximize their usefulness. For instance,
only use a general concept such as “states” if it offers meaningful insight(s).
5) Support (4%): Throughout your essay, aim to include at least 5 outside sources
to construct your argument. These should be used to describe your
comparison case and supply additional details about the issue itself. Outside
sources should be of sufficient quality, with scholarly (academic) or
institutional (organizations) authorship being the standard. Also, in-class
sources should be cited when used but do NOT count as outside sources.
Include in-text citations as well as a bibliography on a separate page in APSA
format (https://guides.highpoint.edu/apsa).
Be sure to addrewss these three questions :
-Question 1: Who are the relevant (legal) parties that must be involved to properly
address the issue at the international level?
-Question 2: How does the comparison case you have selected suggest means by
which the issue may be resolved?
-Question 3: Why is your solution to the issue likely to be successful and are there
any weaknesses?
