During this semester, we will analyze political thought comparatively, describing the development of American ideology as a colloquy among writers and thinkers who have debated the merits and demerits of various political perspectives.
In the final paper for this course, you are to identify two (2) authors from any era of American history and compare and contrast their visions of the nation’s ideology. You may select one author that we have read and discussed in class. The second, however, must be a writer with whom you are not familiar. You may select the second author from among the selections in the text or may seek inspiration elsewhere, including experiences that you have had in other courses. You must, however, select an American thinker rather than a foreign commentator on the American experience.
You should seek to accomplish the following in your analysis:
• Explain each author’s position sympathetically, laying out his or her argument in friendly terms as best you understand it.
• Next, critique the arguments of each author, modifying, adding, or rejecting elements of the argument of each author.
• Finally, explore the similarities and differences between the two authors. Are they beginning from the same premises? Do they articulate similar or different visions for American politics? Do they provide clear prescriptions for change or are they merely critics? Include at least one reference to George Washington.
Your analysis and critique can be conceptual, logical, empirical, even moral. But you should provide a clear, concise, and narrow evaluation of the paired authors. I will grade your work, in part, based upon clarity and your ability to deliver a cogent argument.
The paper should be no more than 12 pages in length, typed and double-spaced on white 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Please use a font that is typical and readable (Times or Times New Roman is preferred but not required) in 12 point. It is not necessary to place the paper in a folder or cover. Simply attach a cover sheet with your name, date, course title and instructor’s name, and staple or clip the sheets together.
The paper is due on Friday, May 3 (please refer to the syllabus for information about grace days and penalties for late assignments). You may turn in a draft for evaluation if you wish, but please do at least 10 days prior to the due date for the assignment. Please see me if you have any questions or concerns.
