This short assignment will consist of your reactions (roughly 3-5 sentences per item) to each of the materials listed below:
1. READING: Philip Wang, “Three Kings: The slow rise and late bloom of three of Hollywood’s most visible and beloved Asian American actors” (in Rise).  (see attachment)
2. VIDEO CLIP: “How This Film Erased Asian Americans From Their Own Story.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3HOOBu8AIM)
3. DOCUMENTARY: Giant Robot: Asian Pop Culture and Beyond. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXHzCXxnsrs&list=PLPIwtZtkAhnok-eMxs_f2CzonvtEvo8_o&index=36)
4. READING: Panthea Lee, “Sex, Death, and Empire: The Roots of Violence Against Asian Women.”
5. DOCUMENTARY: Slaying the Dragon: Reloaded. (2011) by Elaine H. Kim
6. SHORT FILM: Lucky Fish. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOmcuWb5rlY)
Try to observe the following guidelines when writing your reactions to the above six items:
– address what you found to be the most interesting, surprising, or disturbing aspect of each assigned material above (and explain why the material provoked such a reaction in you)
– respond to content in a manner that clearly demonstrates your understanding of broader issue(s) being addressed in each item
HAVE TO ENGAGE A WIDER RANGE OF CONTENT. — For example, instead of being overly fixated on writing about the shock of learning the meaning of the acronym LBFM on page 7 of Lee’s article, you could instead focus on the broader issue of talking about how this acronym ties into the larger relationship between U.S. militarization and the hypersexualization of Asian women in American popular culture (and how all of this surprised or interested you because…)
You can decide for yourself how you would like to organize your written reactions. For instance, you could write your reactions by going from one item to the next, as if you were writing a list. Or, you could write your reactions in paragraph form, especially if you want to talk about certain items in relation to one another because of how they overlap in terms of content (for example, the Panthea Lee article and the documentary Slaying the Dragon: Reloaded). — Still, the general rule should be that your written reactions should be roughly 3-5 sentences long per each of the six items. [So, a paragraph discussing both Lee & the aforementioned documentary could be roughly 6-10 sentences in length.
Finally, strive for originality of thought. Write as clearly and concisely as possible
