Privacy and Security Issues with Biometrics
Given the recent advances in technology, Biometrics is a useful tool for authentication and identification.
The unique level of security in Biometrics does not seem to be matched by traditional technology
methods. However, the Biometrics’ attributes – fingerprints, facial recognition, voice patterns, etc. – can
provide enhanced security measures but also may pose challenges for privacy concerns and potential
misuse.
I will start with how biometrics is applied in real-world scenarios. I will then look into the privacy
concerns associated with collection, storage, and use of this data. There are also potential risks of data
breaches and unauthorized access that poses a risk. Just the sensitivity of biometric data makes it a
logical target for misuse and necessitates a need for strong preventative measures.
I will also look at the legal and ethical aspects of biometrics. From a legal aspect, I will review regulations
that try to strike a balance between the use of technology but also an individual’s rights to privacy. For
ethical considerations, I will look at concerns, especially for marginalized communities and how misuse
in surveillance could be an issue.
As biometrics becomes increasingly integrated into our daily life, understanding the privacy and security
implications becomes very important. I will attempt to propose some potential solutions or practices
that may mitigate risks associated with biometrics. As this field continues to evolve, it’s important to look
at what we can do to ensure there is balance of individual rights with societal benefits.
