These are the course instructions:
You are asked to select any two countries in the world today and compare them: In the case of democracies (or at the very least hybrid regimes operating under less-than-perfect elections), by recent elections, they have run.
– the general goal is to evaluate whether patterns / dynamics are common to the two countries and/or whether they fundamentally differ – and, in all cases, why. Why is one country undergoing a surge in right- wing party support, while the other is seeing a steady stream of victories by left- wing parties? Why have the two countries struggled in their transition to democracy? Why is one country a mature democracy and the other a bastion of autocracy? Those are the types of questions that should be at the root of your paper – depending of course on the two cases (i.e. countries) that you pick.
the paper should run approximately 5 to 7 pages, be double-spaced, and use a minimum of six sources, including three from the course material (be it from the mandatory or from the suggested readings).
