One recent decision made by the supreme court that I feel was a mistake was overturning Roe v. Wade as most of us know by now. The overturn of roe will allow states to restrict access and resources to planning services. Also, it will allow states to make their own rules regarding abortions. Many states have banned abortions and also made them illegal or made it a crime to even help a woman give information about abortion centers. I feel the current majority of justices are ultraconservative and do not represent the balance that should a court of that status should have. not forget to mention how the past president was able to appoint 3 judges. Which is to me an effort to tilt the balance to a more conservative and restrictive government. “Presidents have constitutional powers that give them some degree of influence over the Court. In addition to the Court’s dependence on presidents to carry out its decisions” (Greenberg, 2018).
I also feel that the reason that the supreme court took into consideration to overthrow roe was weak and not sufficient enough. “On Friday, Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his majority opinion that “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.” (Miller, 2022). This makes me think that we are entering a new phase in history that may strip us from rights that made America the beacon of opportunity and liberty.
