The purpose of this assignment is to summarize a key idea or argument about the
interpretation of culture. This idea should be drawn directly from of one of our readings and oriented towards explaining or exploring the process of “reading” or interpreting culture.
You can choose one of the following ideas or select your own from the reading:
culture is “practical”
“culture is concerned with the production and exchange of meaning” (Hall 1)
language is a representational system
language is a signifying practice
the arbitrary nature of the sign
the differential nature of the sign
meaning is “relational”
language is not nomenclature
the mutability and immutability of the sign
The paper should be written for a reader without knowledge of the assignment. This will  
mean that you have to carefully introduce and contextualize the reading.
