1. For this assignment–due uploaded to the link under “Assignments” by Sunday 2/5–you must write a paragraph that formally explains your proposed creative project. After this paragraph, you must present and analyze at least five sources that you think will significantly contribute to your cli-fi project. You may use up to three sources from this class’s readings (a single short story from Imagine 2200 can count as its own source). Your sources must be reliable. Also, please remember that good sources lead to other good sources. See what sources a good book or article cites (look for a bibliography at the end), and consider those sources as well.
I have posted an example of a successful annotated bibliography under “Files” to help you see what yours might look like.
Using proper format: You will present each source in MLA format (alphabetized by author’s last name, etc.). Under each entry you should compose two succinct paragraphs: 1) The first paragraph contextualizes and summarizes the book, chapter, or article. You should tell me what you can find about who wrote the source, as well as why, how, when, and any other aspect that helps establish the context of where the source’s ideas are coming from. You should also summarize the source, elucidating the main ideas of interest to you. Be succinct and thorough; show me that you’ve carefully read and considered every aspect of your source and its ideas. 2) The second paragraph elaborates on how you might use this source in your discussion and/or research. How will they inform your creative project?
2. The critical introduction showcases the research skills of the creative writer as a
complement to the creative work spotlighted in the body of the creative project. This
introduction should reflect the capacities and interests of the individual student,
and therefore will be quite various in approach. It is up to the student to decide
how explicitly he or she wants to make the connections between the critical and
creative portions of the thesis. Some possible approaches, however, may include:
1. The student may choose to write a critical introduction on a question of form
that relates to the longer creative piece. For example, a student producing a
sonnet sequence in her poetry project may choose to write a short introduction
that touches on the history and theory of the sonnet sequence form in
Renaissance England.
2. The student may choose to write a critical introduction on a thematic topic
that intersects with the longer creative project. For example, a student
writing a novella set on board a sailing ship may choose to write an essay
researching a couple of notable works of maritime fiction.
3. The student may choose to write a critical introduction on the work of an
individual writer or group of writers. For example, a student writing a memoir
may choose to write an essay on contemporary memoirists such as Joan Didion or
Cheryl Strayed.
